What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy where the therapist works on
the feet or hands. Reflex points on the feet and hands correspond to
the organs, structures and systems of the body. In a reflexology
treatment, pressure is applied to these points, using thumb, finger and
hand techniques, to bring the body into balance. Reflexology elicits a
relaxation response in the body and this, in turn, allows the body’s
natural healing to take place.
The body is always seeking to return to a state of equilibrium, known
as homeostasis. It is a miracle of nature how the body can heal itself
when the optimum conditions are provided. Unfortunately, due to the
stresses of a modern life-style, our physical, mental, and emotional
wellbeing is often compromised and the body is unable to heal itself
naturally. Reflexology is a holistic therapy, treating the person as a
whole, rather than a collection of symptoms. The therapist can detect
tension in the body and help to bring relaxation, balance and healing.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical
care. The therapist does not claim to diagnose, prescribe or cure.
How can reflexology help you?
Reflexology is suitable for all, including children, the elderly and
infirm. Scientific research in 21 countries has shown that reflexology
is effective for many physical and psychological conditions.
Reflexology may be helpful in:
What happens during a treatment?
- Creating a relaxation response in the body/mind
- Reducing pain
- Reducing anxiety
- Easing stress and worry
- Improving blood flow
- Aiding recovery from illness and surgery
- Benefiting mental health
- Complementing medical care
- Easing pregnancy, labour and post natal recovery
- Improving fertility levels
- In general, reflexology can have a balancing effect, for example on hormone levels and blood pressure
On your first appointment I will discuss with you your general
health, past problems and current health concerns in order to tailor the
treatment to your needs. The treatment will last approximately 50
minutes and I will work on your feet, applying pressure with my thumbs,
fingers and hands, as appropriate. You should feel relaxed and
comfortable. There may be some areas of sensitivity but you should not
feel pain during the treatment. A course of several treatments may be
recommended, depending on your individual needs.
